Landsmith Associates was appointed by Agile Homes and Places for People to create a new landscape for the award wining Stonebridge Park in Bristol, where seven one-bedroom modular homes were introduced alongside an existing supported housing facility.

We collaborated with Agile and the client team to transform a challenging, institutional outdoor space into a welcoming, biodiverse, and uplifting landscape. We aimed to deliver planting that would support seasonal interest, improve resident wellbeing, and enhance the ecological value of the site—connecting it with the Clay Bottom Valley Nature Reserve.

The planting strategy included:

  • Over 56 new trees, plus extensive native woodland whips and fruit trees, and ornamental urban trees

  • New mixed native hedgerows and woodland understorey planting

  • Ornamental planting designed for pollinator value and resilience, including Verbena, Euphorbia, Bistorta, Geranium and Leucanthemum

  • Hundreds of native bulbs such as bluebells, snowdrops, and wild daffodils planted for seasonal colour

  • Scrub mosaics on the upper banks

Working closely with ecologist Geckoella, the landscape integrated a range of ecological enhancements, including invertebrate refugia, hedgehog houses, bird boxes, and bat boxes installed within existing and new woodland areas. Lighting design and construction methods were developed to avoid disturbance to local bat populations and other protected species.

A detailed Landscape and Ecological Management Plan (LEMP) was developed to guide a 30-year programme of maintenance and monitoring. This includes rotational hedgerow cutting and woodland management, formative pruning and monitoring of biodiversity features such as nest boxes and scrub mosaics.

What makes this project special is its social impact. The landscape is part of a wider effort to support formerly homeless individuals in transitioning to independent living. Our planting and layout enhance this mission by creating a serene, green environment that promotes health, biodiversity, and dignity.

Landsmith oversaw the design, specification and site implementation.
