Alongside Mawson Kerr, Useful Projects, Cast, Igloo Regeneration has today been announced as a joint winner in the UK government’s Home of 2030 competition. +Home prioritises nature and community over profit and seeks to abolish soulless housing estates.
RIBA and the BRE led the Home of 2030 competition on behalf of the government departments MHCLG, BEIS, and DHSC to prompt innovative home designs that are green, age-friendly, healthy, and deliverable. The +Home entry was announced as one of six finalists in August before being crowned the joint winner with Open Studio by Housing Minister Christopher Pincher at Homes UK.
Landsmith Associates performed the dual roles of Building with Nature Assessor and landscape masterplanner. Our work included providing concepts, design principles, details of street hierarchy, and design for the aesthetics and function of all outdoor spaces and streets. The focus was on three primary principles: Well-being, wildlife, and water (linked to building with nature), driven by evidence and designed from a system-based approach from home to nature. Our design incorporated play, sustainable drainage, water reuse, shared mobility, waste/bins and cycle parking. Small-scale private gardens were opened to more extensive communal gardens and spaces. They were codesigned by Flavia Goldsworthy and Jen Moreton.
"The winning schemes show what’s possible when architects and designers collaborate and offer intelligent solutions to tackle the housing shortage we currently face.”
RIBA President Alan Jones
